The lone rider
Roberwal Dragonthane leapt from his exhausted steed, as he scurried among the trees that sheltered him from the furious rain. The storm came without warning, striking the lands of Valmekia as hard as a smith’s hammer over hot metal.
The horse was uneasy, as if it felt something unnatural about those rainclouds. Roberwal couldn’t afford the luxury of pondering on such things at the moment, when all of his precious cargo was getting soaked.
Such was the price of his previous actions. In the last months he found himself continuosly acting against the interest of high ranking knights of his order, which brought him to trial under rather misty accusations. Even after rid of all charges, he still found his honor was spotted among his peers, resulting in him being appointed to all sort of minor and pointless quests, like transporting dresses for the wive of a Lord Knight.
At this very moment he was trying to keep Lady Trevalien’s gowns from getting spoiled by the rain, without much success. The water seemed to find every small way into his packages, and the act of opening them only seemed to ruin even more the fine clothes. Feeling the anguish of his master, the horse seemed to control his own nervousness, moving closer to the dryer areas under the tall green ceiling.
Useless as it proved to be, Roberwal turned away from the beast and packs, sinking to the ground aside the trunk of a large tree. As soon as the laid his helm by the floor, the water ceased to fall.
Histerical laugher took him over, disturbing the nearing steed even further. There was surely some kind of godly conspiracy pushing him down and down, till he reached the hellish halls of The Deep.
